Alsace/Lorraine
Alsace
(Ahl Zahs) Alsace is a region that has a
noticeable German influence that is evident in
the charming storybook villages and its bustling
capital, Strasbourg. The oldest Christmas market
in Europe is located in Strasbourg next to the
Cathedral. This region is located between the
Vosges Mountains and the Rhine River. It has
many quaint Christmas markets that are a special
treat for the holiday season. Look for the
local vendors selling hot mulled wine,
gingerbread and spice cookies, bredele(spiced
cakes), and hand carved toys and ornaments.
Outside of Strasbourg the region proudly boasts
the Alsace wine road (Route des Vins) which is
known for its crisp white wines and enchanting
medieval villages along the route. A driving or
biking tour through the vineyards is a wonderful
excursion during the grape harvest season.
Lorraine (Loh RHEHN) Lorraine and the
military history abounds in this region as there
are many World War I battlefields to explore.
This region lets its visitors delight in its
interesting architecture, outstanding churches,
museums, lush rolling hills, nature preserves,
and rivers. Many of the towns have a fascinating
heritage to explore. The exceptional artistic
and cultural offerings can provide many pleasant
excursions throughout the Lorraine region.
The multicultural city of Metz is highlighted by
the Cathédrale St. Etienne with its stained
glass windows and Gothic Architecture. Metz also
is said to have the oldest church in France, St
Pierre aux Nonnains.
